A Note On El
When talking about days of the week etc, use el to say on.
- El fin de semaña = the end of the week
The Past Tense: El Pretérito o El Pasadado
AR verbs:
- yo habé = I spoke
- tu hablaste = you spoke
- el habló = He spoke
- nosostros hablamos = We spoke
- ustedes hablaron = you (all) spoke
Most AR verbs are regular in the past tense, including those which are irregular in the present tense.
- yo pensé = I thought
- yo cerré = I closed
- yo me acosté = I went to sleep
Some AR verbs are irregular in the past tense
Dar:
- Yo di = I gave
- Tu diste = you gave
- El dio = he gave
- Nosotros dimos = we gave
- Ustedes dieron = you (all) gave
Andar:
- Yo anduve = I walked
- Tu andaviste = you walked
- El anduvo = he walked
- Nosotros anduvimos = we walked
- Ustedes anduvieron = you (all) walked
Estar
- Yo estuve = I was
- tu estuviste = You were
- el estuvo = He was
- nosotros estuvimos = we were
- ustedes estuvieron = you (all) were
The spelling of some –ar verbs change for the yo form (to ensure the pronunciation of the stem isn’t modified by the conjugation).
- -car endings change to qué
- -gar ending change to gué
- -zar ending change to cé
Expressions of time:
- Anoche = last night
- Ayer = yesterday
- Hace cinco días = 5 days ago
- Anteayer = the day before yesterday
- El mes pasado = last month
- La semana pasada = last week
- El año pasado = last year
- El jueves pasado = last Thursday
Random Vocab
- barbacoa = barbeque
- por lo menos = at least
- oscuridad = the dark
- luciernaga = firefly
- mudarse = to move (house, etc)
- cortina = curtain
